Semaglutide Tablets
Oral Administration for Semaglutide
Are the Semaglutide Tablets Just as Effective as the Injections?
In all cases, regardless of medication, injections deliver semaglutide directly into the bloodstream, resulting in a much higher absorption rate compared to orally administered tablets.
“Despite the lower bioavailability, studies have shown that oral semaglutide can be just as effective as injectable semaglutide for managing type 2 diabetes and weight loss.”
Here’s a breakdown of the difference:
Injections: With injections, semaglutide bypasses the digestive system altogether, leading to nearly complete absorption. This translates to a bioavailability (portion of the medication that enters the bloodstream) of around 70%.
Oral Tablets: Oral semaglutide tablets have a much lower bioavailability, around 0.5% to 1%. This is because the drug has to survive the harsh environment of the stomach and intestines before entering the bloodstream. Factors like food intake and stomach acidity can further affect how much semaglutide is absorbed from a tablet.
To compensate for the lower absorption rate, oral semaglutide tablets come in much higher doses (7mg to 14mg daily) compared to injectable semaglutide (1mg to 2mg weekly).
Despite the lower bioavailability, studies have shown that oral semaglutide can be just as effective as injectable semaglutide for managing type 2 diabetes and weight loss.
